Summer is almost upon us and most of us will be thinking of long sunny days spent at the beach and topping it off with a nice bright smile. Here are some tips to brighten your pearly whites naturally and there’s no reason why they can’t be delicious too!

Water

We are all aware how important it is to drink plenty of water. Not only does it help keep us hydrated, water also decreases the overall acidity in our mouths thereby lessening the chances of damage to our tooth enamel. Rinsing with water after eating or drinking darkly-coloured foods or beverages will help prevent stains from forming on your teeth.

Strawberries

We may be deceived into thinking that the dark colour of these fruits will cause staining but they contain an enzyme called malic acid which can naturally bleach teeth. They are also packed with vitamin C which can help in removing plaque.

Apples

Apples are also a good source of malic acid. The act of biting into an apple actually helps to strengthen your gums as well as gently cleans your teeth.

Milk and Cheese

As kids, we’ve always been told to drink our milk if we want to grow up big and strong. Dairy products such as milk contain lactic acid and calcium (an enamel-fortifying mineral) which not only strengthen teeth but also whitens them.

Cheese is also in the category of dairy products that contain lactic acid which helps prevent tooth decay and calcium for stronger and healthier enamel and gums. The texture of hard cheese is helpful in cleaning your teeth by stimulating salivary flow.

Celery and Cauliflower

Forget to bring your toothbrush to work? Have no fear! Eat a celery stick! This fibrous cellulose has a high water content that stimulates saliva production and acts as a natural mouth wash.

Cauliflower is another fibrous food that requires a lot of chewing and that action will stimulate salivary flow.

Seeds and Nuts

The hard texture of seeds, walnuts, cashews and almonds acts like an exfoliate on your teeth. Hence removing any surface stains.

As always, a consistent healthy dental routine of brushing, flossing and regular dental visits will help maintain a bright and brilliant smile!
