Root Canal Therapy (Endodontics)
What is this treatment?
Root Canal Therapy is a dental procedure where the infected pulp (nerve and blood vessels) of a tooth is removed and replaced with a filling. Afterwards, the tooth is restored to a functional state with a crown or filling.
How does endodontic treatment save the tooth?
Root canal or endodontic treatment – is necessary when the pulp becomes inflamed or infected. The inflammation or infection can have a variety of causes: deep decay, or fractured tooth that has exposed the pulp, to name a few. If pulp inflammation or infection is left untreated, it can cause pain or lead to an abscess.
During root canal or endodontic treatment, the inflamed or infected pulp is removed and the inside of the tooth is carefully cleaned and disinfected, then filled and sealed with a rubber-like material called gutta-percha. Afterwards, it is recommended the tooth is restored with a crown for protection. After restoration, the tooth continues to function like any other tooth.
